The Census Bureau introduced differential privacy methods for disclosure avoidance in public data products. While enhancing privacy, this approach compromises data accuracy, rendering it less useful for scientific, program administration, and policy applications. Differential privacy techniques limit the release of useful microdata and small-area tabular data. The Texas Demographic Center compared 2010 data without differential privacy to data infused with "noise" using the Census Bureau's method.
